How do we plan for a resilient Marlborough and what is the Foundation?
During 2025 preliminary research looked at several local plans, including but not limited to, the Marlborough Destination Management and Economic Wellbeing Plans. Disaster Risk Reduction, Marine Spatial Planning, the Mauriora Framework, Resilience and Adaptation for Marlborough were considered. This built on marine research projects undertaken in 2024. Marlborough is a beautiful, large region of about one million hectares with 20% of New Zealand's coastline. With stunning scenery and sunshine it is a popular place to live, work, play and visit. There are however, challenges.

Defining our Place by our People, not just our exports
Marlborough, known for beach and bush, may be the nation's birthplace. Nationally, Marlborough is the country's largest grape growing region (85 percent of the country's wine export production). Marlborough’s significant coastline plays an important part in aquaculture (80 percent of New Zealand’s commercial grown seafood).
What is the common Marlborough identity? This is important for social cohesion and community resilience.

As a destination there are many competing industry pressures for tourism from e.g. forestry and fishing. More recently mining has potent undermine Marlborough's resilience and is not part of the contemporary Marlborough identity or Marlborough Destination Management Plan. A Living Lab can help build Marlborough's resilience.
Feb. 2026: NZ Herald Reports that Marlborough is a region with critical minerals and is a target for potential mining.
